EXERCISE HELPS CHRONIC FATIGUE PATIENTS
Many patients with chronic fatigue
syndrome would substantially
benefit if physicians provided medical explanations for symptoms
that could encourage home-based exercise routines, finds
a study
in the British Medical Journal. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
affects
as many as 800,000 adults in the United States and is marked
by
unrelenting exhaustion and muscle pain. A total of 148 volun-
teers diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome were randomly
put
into four groups. Patients in one group received medical
exams
and advice on exercise and positive thinking but received
no
explanations for symptoms. Patients in the other three groups
all received explanations of symptoms to varying degrees
--
either once, over the phone or in person several times over
three months. Explanations focused on disruption of body
cycles
and sleep abnormalities. After one year, 69 percent of the
patients who received explanations had improved physical
func-
tion compared to 6 percent in the other group. Similar improve-
ments were seen in fatigue, sleep, mood and disability. The
researchers note that this approach might be as effective
as
psychological therapy while requiring less time and therapist
skill.
